“A music video is a short film or video that accompanies a complete piece of music/song. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. Although the origins of music videos go back much further, they came into their own in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium, and later with the launch of VH1. The term "music video" first came into popular usage in the early 1980s. Prior to that time, these works were described by various terms including "filmed insert", "promotional (promo) film", "promotional (promo) clip" or "film clip". In Chinese entertainment, music videos are simply known as MTVs because the network was responsible for bringing music videos to popularity in that country.
Music videos use a wide range of styles of film making techniques, including animation, live action filming, documentaries, and non-narrative approaches such as abstract film. Some music videos blend different styles, such as animation and live action.”

General Music Target Audience
Music videos appeal to a wide range of audiences all over the world, however due to the way music videos are presented and their content i feel that their target audience is mainly 16-24 year Old's. I think this is the average age range of people who watch music videos because today music videos are made to make money and therefore attract a younger audience in order to get them interested sooner rather then later. They are also used for educational purposes.
Demographics and Psychographics
'A target audience is determined by several characteristics. Depending on the product, marketing teams will consider the age and gender that will be most interested in making a purchase. Companies will also consider the income range of their potential buyers, as well as where they are in life. For example, a bachelor just out of college has different needs than a successful businessman with three kids and a wife. Other considerations for determining a target audience include lifestyle, career, location (including urban or suburban), education, and hobbies, among others.' http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-target-audience.htm
Demographics describe the profile of a particular market segment. Psychographics are the attitudinal traits people exhibit in their approach to life. http://www.tappernet.com/marketingworkshop/targetaud.htm
Demographic Examples are:
- Age
- Gender
- Occupation
- Household Income
- Marital Status
- Geographic Region(s)
Psychographics Examples are:
- Need for status
- Role of money (does it buy material things, self-esteem, etc?)
- Ethics/"moral compass"
- Risk-taker vs. conservative
'The power of your brand relies on the ability to focus. That is why defining your target market will help to strengthen your brand's effectiveness.' http://marketing.about.com/cs/brandmktg/a/target_market.htm
My Target Audience
Therefore i feel my Demographic Target Audience are Males and Females in the age range of 16-24 who are students, who enjoy indie rock/pop music, as these two genres interlink.
This is in conclusion to research from Questionnaires and interviews, also from general observations and Internet basics. My target audience will be located all over the world in educational institutions and jobs. as there are 16-24year old's all over the world (and music is also worldwide). There seemed to be a small gap in the market for indie/alternate music, therefore choosing this genre will hopefully fulfill my audiences needs. i will attract them by using a variety of techniques, i will find these out by doing research into techniques and colours and effects. this can be done by self report.
The Reason of my demographic audience reflects on the Psychographics, as the age range do not have a big income as they are mainly in education or just starting 'real' jobs. and the prices of them items i am creating are within my audiences age range. it also improves my target audiences social range, as the age specified is a competing age range and are constantly using new media.
