www.hmv.com/
This shows the most popular Albums of 2009 in the charts. From this we can analyse the genre of the music along with that particular Artist to find out similar components within each of the songs/videos in the album to create our own.The top 5 are:
- Lady gaga
- Beyonce
- Paolo Nuntini
- Michael Buble
- Florence and the machine.

From this information I then gathered the top 10 singles chart to analyse the particular songs audiences preferred.
There were as follows:
1. Biffy Clyro - Many Of Horror (When We Collide)
2. Joe Mcelderry: X Factor 2009 Winner - Climb
3. Alexandra Burke - Broken Heels
4. Peter Kay & Animated All Star Band - Official BBC
Children In Need Medley
5. Girls Cant Catch - Echo
6. Saturdays - Ego
7. Cheryl Cole - 3 Words
8. N Dubz Feat Mr Hudson - Playing With Fire
9. Lady Gaga - Bad Romance
10. Sidney Samson Feat. Wizard Sleeve - Riverside (Lets Go)
We can now analyse some content within the video as within this top 10 singles chart we have animated videos as well as Black and White and Colour. We also have a mix of genres.
It also has the prices on so we have a indicator of how much the track would cost and be suitable for our audiences.
I then compared this to the BEST SELLERS singles:1. Peter Kay- Anamation BBC
2. Joe Mcelderry- xfactor climb
3. Boyzone- gave it all away
4. JLS- one shot
5. Jedward- under pressure
6.Lady Gaga- Bad Romance
This allowed me to see the top 10 with best selling, this indicates, that the popularity changes all the time as so many different things are in the public eye. This makes it hard to make a music video for one particular genre when it will have so much other competition. However, you have to think that a music video is just an ‘advertisement for the band/artist’ so your intentions will be to create a great advert to get across the bands intentions. There is some similarities within the top 10 and best sellers. This can be said to be depended on if its a well known artist and maybe even which artists are constantly in the public eye:, EG- jedward, or even if the music is for a special cause: EG- Peter Kay BBC.
ITUNES STORE TOP 10 SONGS
http://www.apple.com/uk/itunes/
i then compared the HMV research with rearch from the itunes website, this may give us different results as it will give us information from public who mainly download their music.
The good thing about using itunes as a research place- is that you can compare the same chart over different countries:

In this screen grab i am comparing the charts of:
- US
- UK
- FRANCE
- GERMANY
- AUSTRALIA

In 3/5 countries, the same single is number one. This single is : TiK ToK- Ke$ha. this shows that even though nationality's are different- a certain target audience is listening to this song to make it very popular. This may be due to many reasons, such as:
- The song itself
- Advertising for the song before realeased
- CD cover
WHSmiths CD CHARTS
http://www.whsmithentertainment.co.uk/cd/chart.list
I then compared all the research from HMV and ITUNES, to a small music retailer such as WHSmiths. This was to see if Cd sales were similar or a complete difference.
The Chart is posted Below:
This Show little Similarity between the charts. it is more closely represented to the HMV chart, then the ITUNES charts. This might be because they are both Retailers in a shopping centre.
